Rendering charitable services for children of our county since 1986

Junior Auxiliary of Rankin County
2011 - 2012 Projects

BAGSS (BOYS AND GIRLS SCHOOL SUPPLIES)

Schedule:  All year with most hours between July and September.

Purpose:  To provide essential school supplies for needy children in grades K-12 from the Rankin County School District and Pearl School District.

How it works:  Each year before the school year begins, students are screened and approved to receive new school supplies.  We continue to communicate with the school counselors to reach the children in need throughout the year. We act as sponsors of this project by purchasing targeted school supplies for grades K-12 based on the supplies that were distributed the previous year.  We sort inventory, store the items that were purchased and distribute school supplies the week before school begins.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY
Schedule: May – July.

Purpose: To obtain community involvement in furnishing school supplies to be distributed through our BAGGS program.

How it works: This is a Chapter-wide mandatory project where each member will be assigned to one of 6 groups. Each group is responsible for putting up a Christmas Tree at a designated Trustmark bank location in Rankin County. This also includes making paper ornaments that represent the needed school supplies for decorating their tree. The BAGGS Chair & Co-Chair will also chair this project.

CARING FRIENDS

Schedule:  All year. Nights and weekends are acceptable with prior scheduling through the project chair.

Purpose:  To provide entertainment and companionship to physically impaired adults.

How it works:  Members spend 1-2 hours once a month with the residents at Methodist Specialty Care Center.  During the visits, we use the time for playing games, reading and interacting with the residents .

CLOTHES CLOSET
Schedule: All year.

Purpose: To serve as a resource for lightly used clothing for low income Rankin County students.  The items in the closet are also made available to meet the needs of families who have an emergency need or are in a in financial crisis.

How it works:   JA members help collect clothes and organize them in a donated space used as our "closet".  We distribute clothes to school counselors for the students and meet with other families to meet their immediate needs as they arise within our community.

How YOU can help: You would be amazed at the number of children in our own community who wear the same clothes day-in and day-out because that is simply all they have. When we get calls from counselors or from fire personnel after a devastating fire, we are prepared with clothes that community members such as yourself have provided for our Clothes Closet. Please email us at JARC@rankinja.org if you would like to donate your "gently" used clothes to our closet.

COPE
Schedule:
Varies.

Purpose:  To supervise the programs of service to the underprivileged and less fortunate in the community.

How it works:  The committee adopts a needy family with children in the community.  A personal one-on-one relationship is established for the year to help the family excel and meet their needs.  Gifts and gift cards are provided for the children on their birthday and holidays.  The members work with the family to inform them of other public service projects available in Rankin County that they can utilize to help meet their needs.  The members also assist those in Rankin County shelters and children who have other needs.  Members work closely with Rankin County social workers, the Rankin County Department of Human Services, the Rankin County Human Resources Agency, the Rankin County Shelter and Rankin County Schools.

CROWN CLUB

Schedule:  August – April. Meetings are held on Sunday at 2:00.  Most project activities follow the meetings while others may be scheduled at other days and times.

Purpose: To involve 10th-12th grade students in Rankin County in volunteer service to their community

How it works:  JA members mentor high school girls from Rankin County in a club that “looks like” JARC.  This group has officers, a board, chapter meetings and service projects.  This project has two Project Chairs.  This needs to be a 2-3 year project for members so that the girls get to know you and become comfortable interacting with familiar faces.

DIAL-A-STORY

Schedule:  All year at member’s convenience.

Purpose:  To provide area children with free access to recorded audio of children's stories.

How it works:  JARC members join forces with the Flowood Rotary Club, the Rankin County Rotary Club and the Flowood Library to select children's stories and have them recorded over the phone. A number to call and a security code are given to the member for recording the stories.  The number will then be published in local papers and other media sources as well as provided to area day cares and Head Start centers.  JA members will also be responsible for distributing informative material to various locations.

GRANT WRITING

Schedule: All year at member’s convenience.

Purpose: To locate potential grant sources and write grants for JARC submission.

How it works: There will be a Chair person that will sit on the board. This person will report the findings and progress of any grants written to the board. Ideally, there will be 2 more committee members that will help research and write grants.

HUDSPETH GIFTWRAP

Schedule:  Project Chair secures the date with Hudspeth in November which is usually the first Wednesday in December.

Purpose:  To provide assistance to the staff at Hudspeth Regional Center by wrapping Christmas gifts for the residents.

How it works:  JA members gather at Hudspeth Regional Center to wrap Christmas gifts for the residents.  JA members wrap and label the gifts for the residents of the center.  Hudspeth provides all of the scissors, tape, wrapping paper, gifts, and batteries.  Hudspeth also provides a continental breakfast in the morning as well as lunch afterwards.

PAINT FOR YOUTH

Schedule:  Date(s) will be set by the Project Chair.

Purpose:  To paint a room at Oak Circle Center at Whitfield (or other selected community location that directly affects children). The kids at OCC are either there because their parents are at their wits end or by court order.  Chances are most of them don’t have happy rooms at home to enjoy.  So, as advocates for the children of Rankin County, this projects steps up and helps to make their time at OCC as productive as possible to give them hope of a future full of possibilities rather than a predestined life of mediocrity.

How it works:  Members are given a certain room by the Court Administrator/Judge to decorate.  Chairperson(s) develops a theme and gets approval from the Administrator/Judge and schedules a date for the project members to assist in painting/decorating.

SCHOLARSHIP

Schedule:  January – April.

Purpose:  To assist deserving students by awarding scholarships for college.

How it works:  The committee members compose an application with a cover letter and hand deliver these to the school counselors in Rankin County (public and private) in January.  The deadline for applications to be returned is in March. In April, the committee meets for the selection process.  Awards are given based on community service, academics, leadership, and financial need.  Committee members go to the Senior Awards ceremonies at the schools in May to present certificates and plaques.

UNIQUELY ME!

Schedule:  September – April.

Purpose:  Provides a self-esteem program targeting girls in grades 6-8.

How it works:  JA members will meet once a month on a Saturday morning at Oak Court Circle for 1-2 hours.  Specific topics to discuss are outlined along with creative suggestions.

YOUNG WRITER’S CONFERENCE

Schedule:  3 weeks in July.  Two volunteers are needed each day (Monday – Thursday) from 8-12 and all members are needed all day on Friday (8-12).  Committee members will choose 1-week and work that week for project hours. The committee members will also meet and plan for an additional 2 hours prior to the event.

Purpose:  To assist with the conference held annually at Hinds Community College for 25 third grade students (each week) from schools across the Rankin County School District.

How it works:  The students create their own writing pieces, listen to speakers, and learn from each other throughout the week.  On Friday, parents, teachers and community leaders are invited to attend a ceremony where each student reads one of their own personal works.
